openSUSE Leap 16.0 Might Be the Reliable Linux Distro You Need

What is OpenSUSE “Leap”?

First, let’s talk a bit more about what openSUSE Leap actually is. Obviously, it’s a Linux distribution—but let’s make sure we understand what it offers and where it fits within the Linux ecosystem.

openSUSE Leap is a stable, free Linux distribution built by the openSUSE community, and it’s closely related to SUSE Linux Enterprise. In fact, it shares its core packages and much of its codebase with SUSE’s commercial enterprise platform, which is a big part of its appeal.

While many Linux distributions prioritize frequent updates and newer software, Leap takes a more conservative approach. New Leap releases generally arrive about once a year, with security updates and bug fixes provided in between, rather than a major round of changes every six months.

That slower pace, combined with its foundation in enterprise software, makes openSUSE Leap a compelling choice for people who want a Linux system that remains stable and doesn’t require them to constantly adapt to major changes.

The current version, Leap 16.0, was released in October 2025 and continues that philosophy. Starting with Leap 16, each minor release receives roughly two years of maintenance and security updates. That makes Leap a good contrast to rolling-release distributions like Arch Linux, since it isn’t built around delivering the latest version of everything as soon as possible.

Speaking of rolling releases, it’s worth pointing out that openSUSE also offers a rolling-release distribution known as Tumbleweed. Unlike Leap, Tumbleweed is built from openSUSE Factory and is updated continuously, so it provides much newer software.

I really appreciate this approach: there’s a version for people who want cutting-edge software and another for those who prefer a slower, more predictable experience.

All in all, openSUSE Leap is aimed at those of you who want a stable distribution that doesn’t fundamentally change every few months.

Desktop Experience

Next, let’s talk about the overall desktop experience, starting with the installation process.

As with pretty much any other distribution, the process starts by downloading the Leap 16.0 ISO image and writing it to a flash drive. Once you boot from it, the installation process is fairly straightforward. The new Agama installer presents you with several sections to work through, some required and others optional.

One of the first prompts asks which openSUSE product you want to install. So, plot twist! Leap and Tumbleweed aren’t the only versions of openSUSE—there’s also Leap Micro.

Leap Micro is a lightweight, immutable operating system designed primarily for containerized and virtualized workloads. In other words, it’s generally intended to serve as a reliable container host rather than a conventional desktop operating system. The first option, standard openSUSE Leap, is the version most of you will want for a traditional desktop.

After that, you can configure the hostname, localization options, network settings, and several other aspects of the installation. Of particular note is the software section, where you can choose from several desktop environments.

This time around, I decided to install openSUSE Leap 16.0 with the Plasma desktop. GNOME seems to get enough attention nowadays anyway. There are other options here as well, including multimedia and office software, along with purpose-specific selections for things like virtualization.

To finish the process, you’ll create your user account and then let the installer do the rest. Interestingly, the installation finished in under four minutes for me, which is really good!

Anyway, after the installation process finished and I had a chance to spend some time with Leap 16, one of the first things I noticed was that its default Plasma implementation is fairly well done. I wouldn’t say it’s the most impressive desktop integration I’ve ever seen, but it does a great job of letting Plasma speak for itself.

And that’s a good thing, because Plasma is awesome. It has a look and feel all its own. It’s similar to Windows in some ways, but it’s certainly not a complete clone. In fact, people have often pointed out similarities between newer Windows features and ideas that appeared in Plasma first—so perhaps some flattery is owed somewhere.

What really makes Plasma stand out, though, is just how customizable it is. Almost everything can be tweaked or moved around, so you can stick with the defaults or create something completely unique. The choice is yours.

Another thing I like about Plasma is that it’s simply a great-looking desktop environment. It might not have the flashiest interface I’ve ever seen, but it toes the line between beauty and functionality. It looks polished without being over the top, and you can customize as much—or as little—as you’d like.

Even if you’re not interested in tweaking anything, the default Plasma configuration is more than usable as-is. You have an application launcher on the left, which organizes your installed apps into categories to make them easier to find. You can search for an app simply by typing its name, and you can access settings and system utilities from the launcher as well.

Along the bottom, we have a panel containing icons for pinned and currently running apps. Leap’s configuration also gives us multiple virtual desktops, which allow you to organize applications across separate workspaces. That’s a feature I use quite a bit to keep tasks from different projects organized.

Everything I’ve mentioned so far is fairly standard desktop functionality. To be fair, Plasma does use a traditional desktop layout by default.

But once you enter desktop edit mode, you start to see just how extensively you can rebuild the entire interface. Whether you’d prefer your panel on the left or want to concoct some sort of picture-frame monstrosity, chances are you can probably do it. You can even change the icons, colors, and overall theme. There’s a huge amount of control, and I think that’s one of the main reasons Plasma fans enjoy it so much.

When it comes to Leap 16 in particular, as I mentioned earlier, it features a fairly standard Plasma configuration. openSUSE doesn’t go too far with custom branding or modifications. Instead, it allows Plasma to speak for itself, and I think that approach highlights the desktop very well.

The main downside is that the version of Plasma included with Leap is behind what you’ll find in many faster-moving distributions. But that’s also part of the trade-off. As I mentioned during the introduction, Leap isn’t intended for people who always want bleeding-edge software. It’s for people who prefer to experience major changes less frequently.

And keep in mind that openSUSE offers Tumbleweed for those who do prefer newer software and more frequent changes.

Is Leap Right For You?

But what makes openSUSE stand out from other desktop distributions, such as Ubuntu or Fedora?

Surprisingly, there’s a bit less to get excited about now that openSUSE has retired most of the graphical YaST stack in Leap 16. YaST was a flagship feature of the distribution for a very long time. It was one of the most comprehensive configuration suites available, making it easier to manage advanced services and perform other system-administration tasks.

Cockpit is intended to replace many of its other system-management modules – however, it isn’t installed by default. You could probably argue that this transition won’t matter much to typical desktop users, but longtime openSUSE users may understandably miss YaST.

Aside from that, there are still some noteworthy openSUSE-specific features worth pointing out. One of those is Btrfs, which Leap uses as the default filesystem for its root partition. It also includes excellent Snapper integration, which can automatically create filesystem snapshots around software-management operations. If an update or configuration change causes a problem, those snapshots can make rolling the system back much easier.

To be fair, Fedora also uses Btrfs by default, but I think openSUSE does a better job of integrating its snapshot and rollback functionality into the overall system.

For me, though, the standout feature of openSUSE Leap is its close relationship with SUSE Linux Enterprise. Leap shares its core packages and much of its codebase with SUSE’s enterprise platform, giving it a stable, enterprise-oriented foundation.

And who says that just because we’re desktop users, we don’t want that same kind of stability?

It’s important to remember that this stability also means packages in Leap’s repositories will often be older than their upstream versions. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. For applications where you do want a newer release, you can always use Flatpak as an alternative.

If I could change anything about openSUSE, it would be for the distribution to attract more users. Don’t get me wrong—it has a dedicated following, and it’s especially popular in certain parts of the world. But its overall audience does seem smaller than those of some other major Linux distributions.

So, why not give it a try? You can test it with one of the available live images or install it in a virtual machine first. Who knows? You might even like it.
